Causes Of Hair Loss
To understand hair loss and Laser Hair Therapy, you first need to understand what hair is.
Hair growth is dependent on the continuous division of cells inside the follicle. Our cells divide and die continuously throughout our lives and hair is the excretion of dead keratinised cells from the scalp or body.
The power source within all of our cells is called the Mitochondria. The process of converting ADP to ATP inside the Mitochondria is what gives our cells the energy to function and divide. As cells in the follicle divide, one of the two divided cells will die and become keratinised and is pushed up into the shaft of the follicle where they are compacted together and excreted as a strand of hair. Continuous hair growth is dependent on cell division at a consistent rate inside the follicle.
It is when this cell division begins to slow that hair loss can occur. Fewer keratinised cells are produced and in turn fewer cells are compacted together leading to thinner hair. Once the production of keratinised cells slows the hair becomes thinner and the follicle shrinks around it until eventually production may stop completely (follicular miniaturisation).
It is widely thought that one of the primary causes of hair loss is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a by-product of Testosterone produced by the body for sexual function. Excess DHT in the body is broken down at receptor sites found in the prostate and the scalp.
It is now commonly believed that energy drawn away and used to break down excess DHT is capable of slowing the process and conversion of ADP to ATP within the Mitochondria and in turn slows cell division in the follicle. Once cell production slows there are fewer keratinised cells produced and over time leads to thinner and finer hair.
Your hair can become thinner, finer and shorter through each hair cycle and eventually hair growth may stop completely, this process is known as follicular Miniaturisation. Once hair growth and cell division has stopped, your follicle can remain dormant supporting only a small, nearly invisible, vellus hair for a number of years until it eventually dies.
